Only administrators have access to the Scheduler menu where they can create, start, stop, restart, update, or terminate a scheduler.

As documents and objects are loaded to the server, they are processed using Schedulers as separate tasks before the data is published to the system. Schedulers are used to manage these tasks and process them through the workflow corresponding to the type of task.

Task specific information is stored in the server for each task sent to a Scheduler. Each task tells the Scheduler what service or process to run, when to run it, and where to run it. This also contains information for the data to process a task once, a number of times, or repeatedly on a specified schedule. Tasks are then processed and assigned to appropriate workflow for applicable users to review or action accordingly.

Each time you create a new scheduled task, the related Scheduler is prompted to poll for tasks after a defined polling interval. The Scheduler then gathers a set number of tasks and retrieves that number to start processing. When a set of tasks is complete, the Scheduler will poll again for more tasks after the set polling interval.

To display the list of Schedulers available in the system:

  • In the System Administration feature set, select Schedulers.

How does a Scheduler poll for tasks?

Schedulers are used to poll for tasks and manage them in a controlled process. The main Scheduler processes the task data and, after finding the correct information, sends it to the appropriate Scheduler for processing. Each Scheduler polls the configured sites in the system at regular configurable intervals to look for applicable tasks that are ready. Each Scheduler then gathers a set number of tasks to process into the system through the applicable workflow.

What are the default Schedulers?

The following Schedulers are delivered with SDx by default:

  • Main Scheduler

  • Report Scheduler

  • Upgrade Scheduler

  • User Management Scheduler

  • Termination Scheduler

  • Job Cleanup Scheduler

  • Integration Scheduler

  • Export Task Scheduler

  • Change Request Scheduler

What is the polling interval?

The Schedulers polling interval is the regular time the database verifies if any tasks need to be gathered and processed. You can set the Schedulers to poll the server sites at specified intervals that you can configure when you create or update a Scheduler. The polling interval default value can vary according to the system to eliminate excessive processing time. If the polling interval affects your system performance, you can set the Scheduler to poll at less frequent intervals by increasing the polling value to help minimize any performance impact that polling is having on your system. Administrators can set the polling value for each individual Scheduler on the Update form.

  • For an SDx system, the default minimum polling interval is set at 30 minutes (1800000 ms).

  • If the scheduler is polling at maximum capacity, any new tasks are not processed until the polling interval is reached and the Scheduler becomes free.

What is an upgrade scheduler and why should you use it?

The upgrade scheduler can only be used to execute any long running tasks during the upgrade. When the upgrade scheduler is enabled, the long running parts of the upgrade are executed in the background, and the upgrade itself is executed faster, reducing the upgrade down time. The upgrade scheduler flag is set to True through an upgrade instruction.
