A commodity codes in Smart Reference Data is built based on a rule, which determines which table details are used to construct the commodity code.

A commodity code has the following important technical aspects that impact either the size of the fitting or its ability to connect to other items in a specification:

  • NPS

  • Dimension Standard or Manufacturer (P_DIM_STD)

  • Facing - End Connections (P_END_PREP)

  • Rating (P_RATING)

  • Material (P_MATERIAL)

Because these properties are key bits of data, they should reside within the commodity code.

In this example, the body consists of a glass tube, rings, seals, and rods, all of which can be made from various materials. But because none of this is important for the model or connections, all of this could be detailed in an alias code (one detail code for combinations of less important data).

Geometrics supplied by this one possible manufacturer are going to be used as a generic example. Clearly, if the sight glasses from various manufacturers differ in dimensions, the source of the dimensions should also form part of the commodity code.

Review the commodity groups and parts on S.10.03 Commodity Part.

A logical group for the sight glass could be Miscellaneous Piping MP.
