Collars and clips are structural plate parts connected between a penetrating profile and the penetrated plate.

A clip provides lateral support for the profile and is attached to one side of the slot, one side of the web of the profile, and sometimes to the base plate. Part of the slot always remains open with a clip. One or two clips on opposite sides of the profile web may be used.

A collar wraps around the slot and the profile. Part of the slot may remain open, or the slot may be completely closed off by the collar when it is on a tight bulkhead.

In 2D Symbols, collar and clip symbols are referenced entirely from profile cross-section symbols, slot symbols, and from the base plate on which the profile is mounted.

The collar and clip symbols delivered with the software consist of the following types:

  • A clips - Attached to the left web of the profile and the left side of the slot.

  • B clips - Attached to the right web of the profile and the right side of the slot.

  • C clips - Attached to the right web of the profile, the right side of the slot, and the base plate.

  • D collars - Wrapped around the profile and slot, but are not attached to the base plate.

  • E clips - Attached to the left web of the profile, the left side of the slot, and the base plate.

  • T collars - Wrapped tight collars around the profile, which completely close the slot.

The number and name of the clip and collar types are customizable.

Within the software, collars and clips are smart occurrences and are placed by user-defined rules after the generation of the structural parts in the Structural Detailing task.

Because symbols are parametric, one symbol can be used to represent multiple collar and clip sizes. For example, one A clip symbol can be used for all slots.

The differences between collars and clips are purely a matter of semantics; the procedure for creating their symbol definitions is the same. As a result, when the term collar is used in the procedures, it refers to both collars and clips.
