About Display Sets

  • Display sets can be created based on linkages using the Linkage search criteria. New display sets created from selected objects default to the Linkage search criteria for all selection filters except Display Sets (Edit > Select Filter > Display Sets). When the filter is Display Sets and the selected objects in the Main view are display sets, then the Display Sets search criteria is used.

  • For .vue files produced by Smart 3D for native data, the DMRS linkages are based on the unique object identifiers, and can be used with each new version of .vue files containing the same graphic objects.

  • For .vue files produced by Smart 3D for non-native data, such as referenced MicroStation or PDMS data, the DMRS linkages may change on every reference. Therefore, we recommend that you use .vue files produced by Smart Interop Publisher for this data, and use other search criteria such as Data instead of Linkage, if possible.

  • When display sets are read from the database (for instance, when opening a model file or selecting the Tools > Refresh Data command), the display set ID number determines the order of precedence when conflicting display characteristics are assigned to the same elements. The lower the display set number, the higher the precedence. This means that an element that is a member of two different display sets will appear with the characteristics of the lower numbered display set, assuming both sets have different display characteristics turned on.

  • To update or regenerate files published using previous versions of Smart Interop Publisher, use the Translate command to translate the source files into Smart Models, and then re-open the updated .vue, .svf, or .zvf file in Smart Review. However, be aware that you must also recreate any display sets that were defined based on label properties.

Editing a Display Set

  1. Select a display set to edit in the Main view.

  2. Click Display Sets > Edit Definition.

Edit Display Set Definition Dialog Box

You can also click Edit Display Sets on the Tools toolbar or double-click on the display set in Project Manager.

  3. Click Edit in the Definition group.

  4. Change the selection criteria as required.

    Edit Definition Dialog Box

  5. Optionally, assign a default material to the display set by clicking Edit in the Default Material group.

When you assign a material name to the display set, all elements in the set appear in the Main view using those material properties (color, surface characteristics, and so on). For more information, see Assign Material to Display Set Dialog Box.

Creating a New Display Set

Follow the steps below to create a display set based on defined queries.

  1. Click Display Sets > Edit Definition.

Edit Display Set Definition Dialog Box

You can also right-click in Project Manager and select New > Display Set, or select this command from the Animation toolbar. Go to View > Toolbars > Animation.

  2. Type a name for the display set that you are defining.

    • You can select an existing display set, and then use the queries defined in that display set to create a new one.

    • Display set names must be unique within the same folder.

    • If you have an editable display set selected in the display set tree control in Project Manager, the display set name defaults to Copy of and the selected display set name (for example, Copy of Reboiler System).

    • If you do not have an editable display set selected in the display set tree control in Project Manager, but the current criteria definition in memory for the Find Object command is not empty, then the new display set description is set to Copy of Find Object.

  3. Type a display set ID number. The new display set ID default is the first non-zero and unused user ID available in the project.

  4. Click Edit in the Definition group.

  5. Click Insert and define the selection criteria for the display set.

    Edit Definition Dialog Box

  6. Optionally, assign a default material to the display set by clicking Edit in the Default Material group.

When you assign a material name to the display set, all elements in the set appear in the Main view using those material properties (color, surface characteristics, and so on) when applied.

  7. Type a Description for the display set.

The portion of display sets that use the search criteria Picked Objects can be lost when you edit the definition in a subsequent SmartPlant Review session. The loss also can occur if the display set definition is loaded using the Import Display Set dialog box. The selected elements are lost if you modify the files containing these elements. For this reason, use the Picked Objects search criteria only in temporary display sets.
