Use inverse clipping to cut away or hide objects inside a clipping volume area to reveal objects that are hard to see.

  1. Set up your Main view to display all or required sections of the model.

    • To match the wireframe in the Main view with the Clipping Volume dialog box, adjust your view such that the axes in the wireframe match with the axes in the Clip Volume dialog box.

    • You can perform a zoom or fit to get closer to the displayed objects and continue your work. Selecting the Fit command automatically takes you to a fitted view of the selected objects in the view, if any. If no objects are selected, Fit takes you to a fitted view of the active clip volume. If there is no active clip volume, Fit takes you to a fitted view of the entire model.

  2. Click on one or more objects in the Main view, and then click View > Controls > Adjust Clip Volume .

The 3D clip volume wireframe defaults to the volume that covers all the selected objects. If no objects are selected, the clip volume wireframe defaults to half the volume of the currently-visible mode and around the center of the entire dataset range. The following example shows the clipping volume wireframe displaying around objects selected in the Main view.

  3. To enable inverse clipping, double-click outside the 3D wireframe in the Main view. To turn off inversion, double-click again outside the wireframe.

  4. To size or define the clipping volume area:

    • Select the objects in the Main view and use the slider on the Clip Volume dialog box to resize. Select the face or corner faces, and then drag the slider up to increase the clip volume wireframe size, or drag the slider down down to reduce the size.
      OR
Drag and drop faces, edges, and corners of the clip volume wireframe.

    • The more the face is perpendicular to the view direction, the less you are able to move the wireframe face.

    • Double-click on a face to turn selection on and off. When the face is turned off, you cannot move it.

    • To adjust clip volume face positions, select and drag a corner of the clipping volume wireframe. You can double-click the corner to turn on and off the adjacent faces for that corner. When you turn on a face, you can move it when you drag the mouse cursor.

  5. To rotate or change the orientation of the clipping volume, click Clipping Rotation , and then click the axis in the Clip Volume dialog box. You can then use the slider with the HOME and END keys to turn the clipping volume clockwise and counterclockwise.
    -OR-
Click and drag the individual axis on the 3D wireframe in the Main view to rotate the clipping volume area around that selected axis.

  6. To move the entire clipping volume without resizing, drag the axis center point. To move the entire clipping volume without changing face sizes, select and drag a single edge.

  7. When you have defined the section or area for the inverse clipping, click Clipping Control in the Clip Volume dialog box.
    -OR-
Click View > Display > Activate Clipping Volume .

When inverse clipping is active, the clipping is done on the inside of the clipping volume wireframe.
