Smart 3D only supports PDS version 8.0 or later.

PDS® Plant Design System is a comprehensive, intelligent computer-aided design/engineering (CAD/CAE) application for plant design, construction, and operations. There are two approaches or methods that you can use to convert your PDS data to Smart 3D:

  • PDS to Smart 3D Conversion Overview. Convert PDS object data to native Smart 3D objects. You can export PDS data and then import the data into Smart 3D to have feature-rich, native Smart 3D objects for use in PPM applications for a variety of workflows. The PDS Translator used in the process leverages the equity in existing reference data and plant models for a comparable Smart 3D production-level design environment to replace PDS. You can export piping, HVAC, electrical, equipment, and structure model data (geometry and properties). PDS designs and data migrated into Smart 3D are equivalent to those that are created in Smart 3D.

  • Convert to Smart Interop Objects. Use the Intergraph Smart Interop Publisher application to convert or translate a Smart Model format (.zvf/.mdb2) used to create Smart Interop Objects (SIOs). SIOs in Smart 3D are lightweight, fit-for-purpose objects that also support As-Built workflows. You can rename SIOs, move them in a system hierarchy, and modify selected SIO properties in Smart 3D. You can also attach Smart Models as read-only reference 3D data in Smart 3D. However, for data export, we will focus on conversion to SIOs in Smart 3D.

What Method Should I Use?

The method to use depends on your specific modelling requirements. The method to convert to native Smart 3D objects generates a fully intelligent model with full conversion of piping specifications. However, this conversion requires significant upfront investment to define compatible Smart 3D catalog and specifications. This method enables designers to continue designing a PDS model within Smart 3D, and to take advantage of Smart 3D's feature rich design environment using PDS data.

The conversion method using Smart Interop Publisher and SIOs provide a faster, lighter solution for PDS data used in Smart 3D. The SIOs implemented with a common schema are not fully functional. You can incrementally convert different sections in a model for design reuse. Portions of the model can be referenced from different Smart 3D models. Use this conversion method for model reviews and walk-throughs during various design and construction phases.
