This procedure allows you to define multiple naming conventions for a specific item type. First, you select an item type that supports multiple naming conventions, for example, Cable. Next, you can enter labels and label descriptions for multiple naming conventions that you want to create, for example, Power Cables, Control Cables, or Grounding Cables. After that, you can access Filter Manager and assign a filter to each naming convention label.

  1. Select Options > Naming Conventions > Define .

  2. Beside Plant group, select Browse.

  3. Select the required plant group.

  4. From the Item type list, select an item type that supports multiple naming conventions.

SHARED Tip When you select an item type that supports multiple naming conventions, the options under Naming convention properties become accessible.

  5. Under Naming convention properties, in the Convention and Convention description boxes, type a label for the convention and a label description.

    • For a label, you can type any name or an actual item type category. For example, for the Cable item type, you can specify labels that designate cables with different functions: Power Cables, Control Cables, Grounding Cables, and so forth.

    • Beside Convention description, select New to add an empty row in the Convention box. Type a new label and description.

    • The software automatically assigns a priority number to each new convention label. The convention label that is created first receives the highest priority (number 1). Each additional label receives a lower priority (number greater than 1). To change the order of priorities, select Priorities.

  6. To assign a filter to a naming convention, beside Filter, select Browse to access Filter Manager, and then select an existing filter or create a new one.

SHARED Tip If you do not assign any filter, SmartPlant Electrical can only create a new item tag using segment definitions specified for the label that you created first.

  7. Under Segment definitions, for each label that appears in the convention list, make segment definitions. See Define a New Naming Convention.
