Viewing 3D files in SmartPlant Markup Plus is slightly different than viewing standard 2D files. Just like with 2D files, you can view files, annotate them with text, audio, or video, or add markups to the file. However, unlike 2D files, 3D files provide more complex viewing capabilities that affect how markups are added, modified, and displayed.

In addition to the tools available for manipulating views of 2D files, some commands help you view 3D models, such as views of plants created in Smart 3D. These tools are available from the 3D menu, the 3D toolbar, or the 3D submenu on the shortcut menu when you right-click in the Detail File Viewer window while a 3D file is displayed.

  • 3D file viewing functionality is available only when SmartPlant Markup Plus is used within SmartPlant Foundation.

  • 3D viewing commands are available only when viewing VUE files. These commands are not available for use with DGN or DWG files.

  • Any active 3D viewing commands are cancelled if you activate a markup placement command. 3D viewing commands (available from the 3D toolbar or 3D menu) are not available until you cancel the markup element command by pressing the ESC button or right-clicking in the Detail File Viewer window.

Viewing Markup Elements in 3D Views

Once you place a markup in a view, it becomes part of that three-dimensional view. Therefore, if you were to place a markup element at a point in the model and then rotate the view 180 degrees, the markup element would be rotated accordingly. Markup elements may look quite different in various views. For example, a rectangle markup element placed in a front view would appear as a line in a side view, as the rectangle markup element has no depth.

Editing Markup Elements in 3D Views

Markup elements placed in a 3D view can be modified only from within that same view. To return to the view in which a markup element was created, double-click on the markup element when in Select mode. The view will automatically return to the view in which the element was created. You can make your edits to the element and then use the Previous View command to return to the view you were working in before you clicked on the markup element.
