Identifies the parts that intersect with a block cutting plane, define whether to assign the part to a block or where to split the intersecting structural parts by perpendicular offset from the cutting plane, and then create the split. Parts are initially assigned as defined by the Block Assignment process.

Anyone with write access permission to the part items is allowed to create splits using Manage Block Intersections . If you do not have write permissions to the items, the items can be assigned to a block but cannot be split. In the absence of write access permissions, if you create or edit a split or move a block cutting plane, the associative edits of the splits appear on the To Do List (click View > To Do List).

Assigning Parts to Blocks and Assemblies

You have several methods for assigning parts to blocks or assemblies:

  • Using Manage Block Intersections for most block assignments.

  • Using New (Block) Assembly for initial assembly and assembly block assignments.

  • Using a drag-and-drop operation in the Workspace Explorer for additional or modified block, assembly, or assembly block assignments.

Manage Block Intersections identifies the parts that intersect with a block cutting plane, defines whether to assign or split a part, defines where to split the intersecting part (by perpendicular offset from the cutting plane), and (if you have write permission for the item) creates the split. The software associates splits to block cutting planes. When you move or delete planes, you move or delete the splits as well. Parts are initially assigned as defined by Block Assignment.

The software lists the intersections of parts with block cutting planes. If a part has multiple intersections with the selected cutting planes, the software lists multiple intersections. You can define the offset and direction to modify the position of each intersection individually. This modifies the position of the split. After you cut the parts, the software keeps track of splits that you created.

The intersections appearing on the Manage Block Intersections dialog box can be controlled by selecting one or more parts, cutting planes, or blocks.

When using Manage Block Intersections , you cannot reassign parts that are fully within the boundaries of a block. A part completely within the boundaries of a block may need to be assigned to another block due to construction sequencing, most commonly for parts near block boundaries. In this case, you can reassign parts that are fully within the range of a block by dragging the parts to any block or assembly in the Workspace Explorer.

You can also use the drag-and-drop operation to reassign parts in assemblies and assembly blocks.

Planning Seams

A planning seam is created when Manage Block Intersections is run and an intersecting part is set to Split or Offset.

A planning seam is deleted when Manage Block Intersections is run and an intersecting part is set to Intersected or Assigned.

A planning seam is modified when the cutting plane of a block is modified.

Planning seams can also be added manually using the seam commands in the Molded Forms task. For more information, see Creating Seams in the Molded Forms User's Guide.
