The primary purpose of the Planning task is to define and document how and where to build model structure and its subassemblies (production planning), rather than when to build the structure (production scheduling). The result is an assembly hierarchy analogous to a manufacturing bill of material that can be considered the specification of how to build the structure (assemblies and their assembly sequence). To view the assembly hierarchy, click the Assembly tab in the Workspace Explorer.

The assembly hierarchy is attributed with assembly information, including manufacturing orientation, workcenter, equipment, and weld sequence that specifies the details of how and where to manufacture.

The main Planning object types shown in the assembly hierarchy are:

Block

High-level assembly that is a spatial definition of a section of the model structure. Blocks are created by splitting a volume and contain assemblies, parts, and/or child blocks created by splitting the block. Child of the top- level block (B0), an assembly block, or another block.

Assembly Block

Collection of blocks, assemblies, structural parts, equipment, outfitting parts, and outfitting assemblies (such as pipe spools, HVAC, and so forth). Child of the top-level block or another assembly block.

Assemblies

Collection of assemblies, structural parts, equipment, outfitting parts, and outfitting assemblies (such as pipe spools, HVAC, and so forth). Child of a block, assembly block, or another assembly.

Pipe spool

Assembly of pipe parts and components. Must consist of a minimum of one pipe part and one component (usually a flange). A spool usually runs between mechanical connections on a pipe run (for example, from flange to flange). Child of a block, assembly, assembly block, or the unassigned parts node.

UnAssigned Parts

Folder containing parts that have been automatically assigned to a block but have not been assigned to an assembly. Child of block node.

Parts (icons are the same as the System tab icons)

Various light and detailed structural and outfitting parts created in other tasks. Child of a block, assembly, assembly block, or the unassigned parts node.

Planning Joint Folders

Folder containing Planning Joints. Child of a block, assembly, assembly block, or the unassigned parts node.

Planning Joints

Physical connection decomposed into its individual manufacturing components, such as the individual fillets on a double fillet weld. Child of the Planning Joint Folder.

  • Additional bitmap icons for user-defined assembly types are defined by and stored with the Planning reference data.

  • Assembly and block icons can also be displayed with a warning icon  or an error icon  superimposed at the bottom right. These icons provide information that the Check Manufacturability command has changed the status of the item due to less severe or severe detection of the manufacturability problems.
