We recommend that you back up the following before beginning the upgrade:

  • The SmartPlant Foundation data on the database server

  • All SmartPlant Foundation virtual directories in IIS on the various servers used by SmartPlant Foundation

  • Vault directories and contents on the file server

  • Schema files, if customizations have been made

  • Any SmartPlant Foundation custom files (DLL files and others), if customized and added to an installation

  • Desktop_Client.exe.config (by default, located at [drive]:\Program Files (x86)\SmartPlant\Foundation\SPFDesktopClient\CurrentVersion) if you have multiple sites to export and restore

You will have the option to back up your database while using the Upgrade Wizard. If the backup fails in the Upgrade Wizard, the upgrade actions will stop, and you will be asked to back up your database using another method.

When performing a database backup, make sure the versions of the database client and server match. For example, for an Oracle 19c database server, use an Oracle 19c client. If the matching client version is not currently installed on your application server, you can install the matching client on the application server or perform the backup directly on the database server.
