You can renumber tags in the MTRAuthoring domain in multiple ways. For example, you can renumber an existing tag by assigning a new number in the following ways:

  • Provide new tag numbers while updating the authored tags.

  • Provide new tag numbers when list editing the existing authored tags.

  • Provide new tag numbers in the Microsoft Excel data sheet and import them into SmartPlant Master Tag Registry.

You can renumber the tags created with or without an ENS (Engineering Number System) definition. However, if you use ENS, make sure that the ENS definition contains the sequence number as an ENS function when you renumber the tags.

Renumber tags using SmartPlant Master Tag Registry

  1. Click Find > MTR > Authored Tags to search for the tag or tags in the MTRAuthoring domain that you want to modify.

SHARED Tip You can also click Query > MTR > Authored Tags and provide specific search criteria to find the tag or tags.

  2. Select the tag that you want to renumber, and right-click Update.

  3. In the Update - <Tag name> dialog box, change the existing number to the new sequence number or tag number you want to assign for a tag in the New Sequence Number box.

  4. Click Finish.

  • You cannot create multiple tags of same type with the same tag number. For example, PI-200 and PI-200.

  • You can create tags of different types with same sequence using the standard dialog box but not using the Microsoft Excel data sheet. For example, CV-200, PI-200, and PDSL-200 can be created using SmartPlant Master Tag Registry standard dialog box.

Renumber tags using List Edit in SmartPlant Master Tag Registry

  1. Click Query > MTR > Authored Tags and provide specific search criteria to find the tag or tags.

  2. Select the tag or tags, right-click, and click List Edit <Tag Type Name> Properties.

  3. In the List Edit <Tag Type> dialog box, type tag number in the New Sequence Number box, and click OK.

If you want to select multiple tags of different tag types to renumber, right-click the tags and click List Edit Common Properties.

Renumber tags using Microsoft Excel

  1. Generate a Microsoft Excel data sheet with the tags you want to renumber. For more information, see Generate and edit a data sheet offline.

  2. In the Microsoft Excel data sheet, type the tag number you want to assign in the New Sequence Number column.

  3. Save the data sheet as an .xlsm file and import it into SmartPlant Master Tag Registry.

  • Create different tags with the same sequence number using one of the following steps:

    • Disable ENS in SmartPlant Foundation and use the datasheet to create all new tag numbers as strings. For example, the following tags share the same sequence number and are part of a control flow loop (F-100): FT-100, FE-100, and FI-100.

    • Create multiple datasheets for import using the same sequence number. (The datasheet does not support multiple tags with the same sequence number.) Import is successful if the same sequence number is used in all of the datasheets.

    • When you successfully import new tags from a datasheet, the Create Authoring Tags Log.txt log file is generated. This file lists tag numbers and sequence numbers (provided in the datasheet by the ENS). The log file is located at [drive]:\Windows\temp.

  • When you renumber tags, the existing sequence number of an authored tag is replaced with the new sequence number provided in the Microsoft Excel data sheet.

After renumbering, you must create a snapshot of the authored register document or documents with which the renumbered tags are associated. Then publish the tags into the MTRPublishing domain to update the information in CDW, so that registers can be recreated with updated data. To create a snapshot for authored register documents and publish, see Managing Authored Documents.
