The more items that are added to the shortcut menu, the slower the menu displays. This is also true of methods. Some methods require the software to execute conditions to determine whether or not the method appears.

The recommended approach is to keep the methods and expansion options limited by the role of the user. By providing a number of focused roles, it is possible to match the menu options to the specific tasks needed by the role. Consider providing multiple roles for a user, instead of one very large configuration of items on the menu bar and shortcut menus.

On the General tab of the Change User Preferences dialog box, select Refresh automatically after right click.

Selecting this option means that the software should not display the menu that was cached from a previous shortcut menu selection. Clear this option to allow the software to use any existing cache and open the shortcut menu faster. The first load will be slower, but the subsequent loads will be faster.

Using the shortcut menu toolbar

You can configure a toolbar to display the most common shortcut menu options for an object. This feature provides the user with context-sensitive icons on the toolbar without opening the shortcut menu. For example, the most common document commands, such as Revise, Check Out, Check In, and Sign off, can be displayed on this toolbar.

By default, the Shortcut toolbar displays the Details and History buttons; however, any existing shortcut menu method can be added to the toolbar by updating the method and providing the shortcut icon, display text, or both. When a user logs on to the Desktop Client, the software retrieves all the methods for which the Shortcuticon or Shortcutdisplaytext properties are populated and makes the methods accessible to users through their roles. The Shortcut toolbar is context-sensitive in that it only displays shortcuts that are configured on the selected objects.

To maximize performance, the software does not test any conditions on the methods until the method is selected from the toolbar. For example, if the Signoff and Revise commands are added to the shortcut menu, then the commands would both appear on the menu when the user selects a current document. The conditions are tested when the user selects the method. The user is informed of process status and is given the option to continue processing the valid objects. After the shortcut properties, Shortcuticon or Shortcutdisplaytext, are populated, administrators must log out of the Desktop Client and log back in to see the updates to the existing methods on the Shortcut toolbar.
