Problem

An error occurs when using the Data Capture Data Sheet Reader Pre-Processor in the Web Client to extract content from latest documents which have Microsoft Excel files attached. The software displays the following error:

Microsoft Excel cannot access the file 'C:\Windows\TEMP\6ed85bf1-9034-402f-b88e-24b30e5c24a8\i-1409-pse-0007.xlsx'. There are several possible reasons:

  • The file name or path does not exist.

  • The file is being used by another program.

  • The workbook you are trying to save has the same name as a currently open workbook.

  • Please ensure that user on the Server Application pool is a system administrator and Microsoft Office is installed/configured to extract the content.

  • Content files generation failed.

Solution

This error occurs when IIS users and SPFusers do not have permission to access the Microsoft Office application. To avoid this scenario, complete the following steps:

  1. Based on the type of Microsoft Windows operating system on SmartPlant Foundation server, do the following:

    • For 64-bit, create a folder named Desktop in the following location: C:\Windows\SysWOW64\config\systemprofile

    • For 32-bit, create a folder named Desktop in the following location: C:\Windows\SysWOW32\config\systemprofile

  2. Check the Desktop folder permissions to ensure that all the SYSTEM permissions are enabled for the following users:

    • IIS_IUSRS

    • SPFusers
