Principles of BOM Handling

In Smart Materials, a Bill of Materials (BOM) can be considered a list of materials for a node in the work breakdown structure (WBS). It can be created for a unit, an area, a line number, or an isometric. Commonly, BOMs are created for line numbers in the estimating or forecast phases and for isometrics after design has been started.

In the estimating or forecast phases, material is entered either manually or it can be imported from Microsoft Excel sheets. Later in the design phase, the material is imported from a CAD system.

Steps required to create BOMs:

  1. Pre-settings - Define project defaults and list views.

  2. BOM setup - Define setup requirements or copy from another project.

  3. Create the Work Breakdown Structure (WBS).

  4. Enter data, either manually or via BOM import.

You can find workflow diagrams showing the BOM setup overview in the following chapter.
