Tools > Materials > Assign Materials

To use this functionality, you must install the Photo-Realism module.

Displays the Assign Material to Elements dialog box allowing you to:

  • Assign materials in a palette file to objects in a model file.

  • Preview how a material looks on objects in the Material Sphere by either selecting objects from the Main view to see the related material assignment, or by choosing the model file name, level, and color associated to the material.

Before you can assign materials to a model:

  • The material definitions in the palette files must already be created and in a folder in the search path for your project.

  • You must have used different levels and colors to distinguish between the different surfaces in a model. As you assign materials to the model, identify the model objects by specifying the color and level numbers used in the model file. When you assign a material to a model surface, that material is applied to every model object that is on the same level and color as that object. If every part of the model is on one level and uses only one color, you can assign only one material definition to the entire model.

  • If a material assignment is not made to a surface, Smart Review uses the default material value for that surface. For more information, see Working with Materials.

Assign Materials

  1. Select Tools > Materials > Assign Materials, and then browse to the palette file to use. If you have a Smart Model open, select its associated palette file, if one was used for translation. The palette file should be in the same folder as the translated Smart Model files.

  2. Click Palette File to populate the Name field if it is blank, and then select the material definition to assign.

  3. Identify the surface for the material assignment by selecting the model file (from the Files list), level (from the Levels list), and color (from the Color list) of that surface. Select one of each to identify the surface.

You can identify more than one surface at a time by selecting more than one model file, level, and color combination. Click Select All to select all the files, levels, or colors; or, use Clear All to clear all the file, level, or color entries.

  4. Click Pick to select an object in the Main view and define a material to that object.

  5. Click Apply to save an assignment without exiting the form. Repeat steps 1-5 to make additional assignments, if necessary.

  6. Save the .vue file to retain the assignments. Smart Review saves the changes to the selected palette file.

A material table (.mat file) is created for each model file that you select. Smart Review stores material assignments in a .mat file; not in the project database. To delete all material assignments, delete the .mat file of the project.
