NodeTypesandSettings12What are nodes?

The structure of an engineering bill of materials (BOM) is established by nodes and the way in which they are linked together. The characteristics of a node are established by allocating a node type. A node type is thus the descriptive element of a node. The description of a node type is composed of several elements.

When are node types used?

By using node types and their properties, you can establish the hierarchy of a project work breakdown structure (WBS) with units, areas, line numbers, and isometrics. Node types are distinguished by the properties assigned to them. You can to assign the same properties for structures of the same node type but only one node type can be assigned to each node in the WBS. Also, a property can only be allocated once to a node type. When allocating properties to a node type, the user gives sequence numbers which establishes the sequence of variable node properties in the WBS.

Node types or node type properties can only be deleted if the node type has not yet been allocated to any node within the WBS.

  1. On the Home page, click Bill of Materials > SETUP > Node Types and Settings.

  2. Click Add Row from the Node Types section.

  3. Enter the node type name in the Name cell, and descriptions in the Short Description and Description cells.

  4. Optionally, select the appropriate properties/parameters for the Description Rule from the select list.

    • Additionally, you can add any free text. The combination of the selected values and entered text defines the rule.

    • For the properties, be sure to use only properties that are assigned to the node type, or are available at the structural level in the BOM.

    • The description of a node in the WBS can be derived from a rule. When creating a new BOM node, the software creates a node description based on this description rule.

  5. Select Yes or No from the Use for Weight Calculation cell.

If you select Yes, this node type will be used for weight calculation during a forecast/reservation run. If No is selected this will not be used for wieght calculation.

  6. Select the appropriate control status from the Ctrl select list.

SHARED Tip Click the node name from the Name cell in the Node Types section to view the Node Master Properties page.
