Smart Materials/Smart Reference Data Version
2020 (10.0)

To use Business Intelligence Reporting, you need a separate license.

If your license key does not contain Business Intelligence Reporting (MBI) seats, any other available seat is used instead when launching Business Intelligence Reporting. The available license seats are checked and taken in this sequence:

  1. MBI (Business Intelligence Reporting)

  2. MEP (Engineering and Procurement Integration)

  3. MSC (Material Supply Chain Management)

  4. MLC (Material Lifecycle Library)

  5. RD (Smart Reference Data)

  6. MAT (Smart Materials)

If no seat is available, the message 'No License available' appears.

Access via Smart Materials or Smart Reference Data

To launch Smart Materials Web from a Smart Materials or Smart Reference Data session, click BI Reporting > Start BI Reporting Portal from the Smart Materials or Smart Reference Data main menu. You do not have to provide your login credentials again.

  • To enable the Start BI Reporting Portal menu item, you must define the DBA settings BI_REPORT_SCHEMA and BI_REPORT_URL (see Configure DBA Settings).

  • Smart Materials Web sessions do not take any additional license seats when they are launched from Smart Materials.

  • If you log off from Smart Materials but stay logged on to Smart Materials Web, the Smart Materials Web takes a license seat. If you re-log in to Smart Materials, a Smart Materials seat is taken and the seat taken by Smart Materials Web is no longer used.

Direct Access

If you launch a Smart Materials Web session from a browser (see Log in), you must log in with your credentials. This session takes a license seat.

If you open multiple Smart Materials Web sessions from the same computer, each session takes a license seat. It does not matter whether you log in with the same or different credentials, or if you use different web browsers (for example, Internet Explorer and Firefox).

Session Based License Check In/Out

Starting with version 2016 R1 (8.1.0), Smart Materials Web is compatible with the Session Based License Check In/Check Out with SmartPlant License Manager (SBCS) license model. You must configure SBCS in A.60.81 and the required SmartPlant License Manager (SPLM) services for BIR. For more information, see Session Based License Check.

How Smart Materials Web consumes licenses from SPLM:

  • Case 1 – Direct Access

Smart Materials Web is launched from a browser or using the navigation menu in Smart Materials classic from a session that does not consume any seat.

Each Smart Materials Web session will pull its own seat, even if the session is launched from the same computer and by the same user.

If you log out from Smart Materials Web, the license seat is returned to SPLM.

  • Case 2 – Smart Materials Web launched from an Active Session

When Smart Materials Web is launched from other applications (Smart Materials, Smart Materials Classic, Smart Reference Data) that have already consumed an SPLM seat, the Smart Materials Web session will share the same SPLM seat and not pull another seat.

If you log out from Smart Materials Web, the license seat is not returned to SPLM, unless the invoking application does no longer hold the seat. Similarly, if you log out from the invoking application, Smart Materials Web will not return the seat unless Smart Materials Web does no longer hold the seat (if you log out, or if you close the browser without clicking Logout).

  • Case 3 – No Smart Materials Web License available

If no license is available for Smart Materials Web, this message is displayed: ‘The access is denied by the License Manager’.

In the m_lic_log_messages table, you can find more details about the error.
