Smart Materials/Smart Reference Data Version
10.1

Units of measure are used in Smart Materials and Smart Reference Data in many places. The units are separated into different unit groups.

Several unit groups are hard-coded in the software and thus must be defined exactly with a certain spelling. For example, the unit groups CURRENCY, QUANTITY, and WEIGHT are used in the currency, quantity, and weight unit fields to filter the list of values and for validation of entered values. Additional unit groups hard-coded in the software are DIMENSION, LENGTH, PRESSURE, OTHERS, TEMP, and VOLUME.

Units must be defined uniquely over all unit groups, which means a unit can only be assigned to one unit group. In consequence, a unit assigned to a unit group cannot be used in another group. For example, if you assign 'm' (meter) to unit group LENGTH, 'm' cannot be assigned to QUANTITY unit group. To resolve this issue by removing this restriction and to provide a more flexible usage of units, the Unit Type concept has been introduced. Units must still be created under a unit group, but now you can assign units to multiple unit types. In the above described example, the unit 'm' can be assigned to unit types LENGTH and QUANTITY, as shown on the picture below.
