Use this procedure to compare two EDE reports, or two revisions of the same EDE report. To open the Report Comparison Wizard and create a comparison between two EDE reports do the following:

  1. From the EDE Explorer, open the required EDE view.

  2. Select the EDE Actions tab, and on the EDE Actions toolbar select Print Report EDE Print Report Icon.

  3. At the prompt: Do you want to preview reports before printing? select Yes.

When printing a report from an EDE view, the software displays the column header name based on the attribute name. If the following characters are part of the column header {'!', '>', '<', ' ' ', '~', '&'}, the software automatically replaces them with a blank space. For example: a column header named: Instrument&Name is displayed in the report as Instrument Name.

  4. On the Report bottom toolbar, select Compare Compare Print Preview to open the Report Comparison wizard.

  5. On the Welcome page of the Report Comparison wizard select Next.

  6. On the EDE Type page, select the EDE Type of the EDE view you want to use for the comparison.

Only EDE Types that have report revisions which include at least one field in common with the current report are listed.

  7. Select Next.

  8. On the View Name page, select the EDE view that you want to use for the comparison, and select Next.

Only EDE views that have report revisions that include at least one field in common with the current report are listed.

  9. On the Revision Number page, select the revision number you want to use for the comparison.

    • Only revisions that include at least one field in common with the current report are listed.

    • If you select a non-archived report, you can only select the Audit trail changes report option for the Comparison Output. No other options are available.

  10. Select Next.

  11. On the Summary page, review the details that you selected. You can go back and modify your selections.

  12. Select the Comparison Output that you want to see. You can select one of the following:

    • Mark changes - (default) displays all the data with the differences between the two reports highlighted.

    • Delta report - lists only the data that is different between the two revisions.

    • Audit trail changes report - In addition to the Delta Report, this option includes a list of all changes to the items in the current report between the times of the two reports. For example, if the current report lists information about Instruments and Loops, and the time between the generation of the two reports is two hours, all changes that were made to the Instruments and Loops listed in the report during those two hours are listed.

      • Changes to properties that are not included in the report are shown in the audit trail with yellow highlighting.

      • If you select Audit trail changes report, even though the reports may look identical, you will not be notified that they are identical if changes have been made to item properties that do not appear in the reports.

      • The Audit trail changes report displays a date and time stamp defined by the database the software is connected to, and not by the operating system’s date and time.

      • The Audit trail options will not retrieve Change Log data for updates in Index and Wiring supporting tables as these are not recorded to the database.

  13. Select Finish to run the comparison.

Due to limitations in the software, under certain circumstances after running Compare View, the differences in an EDE View are not highlighted. Instead blank cells are displayed in the EDE where changes have occurred. This only happens in the EDE view. The Compare Report, reports all changes/differences that have taken place between revisions.

The problem occurs when the relation between two item types is removed and an attribute is missing from the parent item type.

For example, An EDE with an Instrument Item Type and a relation to a Loop Item Type. When the EDE is generated both the Instrument Name and Loop Name are displayed. After creating a revision and making changes to the EDE, running the Compare View produces a report with all the changes listed and the EDE highlights the changes in the grid.

However, if after creating a revision you disassociate the loop from the instrument, the Loop Name is not known to the instrument and the next time you run Compare View, the report states that the Loop Name doesn't exist and In the EDE View blank cells are displayed instead of the Loop Name and without highlighting.

To solve this problem, in the above example you would add the Loop Name attribute to the attributes you want displayed with the Instrument Item Type.
