You can apply selection rules to a 3D model or 2D drawing. When you apply a selection rule, components associated with that rule are available for selection. You can then select and view groups of components based on the selection rule and drag those components to an IWP.

You can use the following selection rules on a 3D model or 2D drawing: Assembly, which allows you to select an assembly associated with a model or drawing; Component, which allows you to select any component in the model or drawing; ISO/drawing, which allows you to select any isometric drawing associated with the model or drawing; Spool, which allows you to select an entire spool associated with the model or drawing.

  • When you apply the Assembly, Spool, ISO/drawing selection rule, components associated with the selection rule and components not associated with the selection rule are available for selection.

  • When you select a spool using the Spool selection rule, the spool is selected as it was modeled in the authoring tool. For example, if supports were included as part of a spool, Smart Construction selects supports as part of the spool.

  • The name of the current selection rule displays in the Toolbox title.

  • You can configure Smart Construction to display both the latest engineering drawing and any superseded versions of the drawing. For example, an engineering drawing might be superseded by a drawing with fabrication changes.

  • You can configure Smart Construction to display both the current spool and any superseded versions of the spool.

  • On some construction projects, fabrication might require modifications to the engineering data. For more information, see Plan components with fabrication changes.
