Each IWP in Smart Construction is assigned a purpose, which determines the type of work planned for the package, such as installation, testing, verification, fabrication, and so on. As work is planned for an IWP and components are added to the IWP, work steps can be added to components to detail and track work to be completed. Work steps track what work needs to be done and how long the work takes.

Work steps can be automatically associated with a component based on rules of progress during a Smart Construction retrieve.

You can manually add work steps on each component, and you can arrange the sequence of steps in order to plan work in a particular order.

For example, if you create an installation IWP and add a cable tray to the package, work steps can be added to detail how to install the cable tray. Work steps such as the installation of structural steel supports, the placement of cable trays, and the installation of cable trays can be added and sequenced.

As work is completed on components in an IWP, you can mark individual work steps as complete, or you can mark work for an entire component or IWP complete. As you mark work steps and components complete, the man hours and percentage complete updates.

Smart Construction administrators can configure and personalize rules of progress based on the specific needs of an organization. Or, your administrator can create a custom Rules of Progress service. For more information, see Configure the Rules of Progress or Rules of Progress service.
