  1. Click Get Objects by Volume on the 3D model Toolbox to open the Get [Objects] by Volume dialog box and the Clip Volume dialog box.

The name of the Get [Objects] by Volume dialog box dynamically changes based on the selected selection rule.

  2. Select a selection rule from the Selection rule list on the Get [Objects] by Volume dialog box.

If you select a custom selection rule, select or specify properties for the rule to select in the Selection value box.

  3. If you want to limit components selected in the clip volume to those fully contained in the clip volume box, select the Inside only check box.

Otherwise, the clip volume box selects components that are inside the box and those that cross the boundaries of the box.

  4. From the Clip Volume dialog box, select the face or corner (faces) that you want to size. The following example shows the Top Front Right plane faces have been selected.

  5. Click and drag the slider up to increase the clip volume box size, or down to reduce the size as needed.

  6. Click Get Objects on the Get [Objects] by Volume dialog box to retrieve a list of all components contained in the Clip Volume box.

When the clipping volume is at the required size and location, click Clipping Control in the Clip Volume dialog box. All objects that are not in the clip volume box are removed from the display.

  7. Click Expand to view search results in the Volume Results list.

  8. Select Actions > Properties to view a list of properties.

  9. Select Actions > Drawings to display any drawings related to the component, assembly, or spool. Select a drawing name to open the drawing.

  10. Click Open in New Window to open a drawing in a new window.

  11. Click Expand to view a list of components in a drawing, spool, or assembly.

  • You can create and save a filter with the selected volume of components in the Get [Objects] by Volume dialog box. For more information, see Save a filter with the selected volume of model components.

  • For more precise control when resizing the clip volume box, click the slider in the Clip Volume dialog box and then use the middle mouse wheel, the Up/Down arrow keys, or the PgUp/PgDn keys to adjust the clipping volume. The Up/Down arrow keys move the clip volume box in small increments while the PgUp/PgDn keys move the box in larger increments.

  • Click the slider, and then press the Home key to expand the clip volume box to the current maximum for the current selected face(s) being adjusted. Click the slider and then press the End key to minimize the clip volume box for the current selected face(s) being adjusted.

  • If the slider is at its limits (top or bottom position), click again on the desired face or faces being adjusted to reset the slider position to the middle. The slider can only expand the selected clipping volume face(s) to double the amount from the starting middle position.

  • The selected face(s) being adjusted display in red in the clip volume box. The unselected face(s) not being adjusted display in yellow.

  • The Get Objects option selects visible components. As a result, you can use filters and the Hide option on the Applied Filters group to narrow or broaden components in the Volume Results list. For example, if you want to select only equipment in a given volume, apply an equipment filter, click Get objects by Volume, adjust the size of the Clip Volume dialog box, then use the Hide option to hide the model. When you click Get Objects on the Get [Objects] by Volume dialog box, equipment components available in that volume are listed in the Selection Results.

  • You can configure Smart Construction to display both the latest engineering drawing and any superseded versions of the drawing. For example, an engineering drawing might be superseded by a drawing with fabrication changes.

  • You can configure Smart Construction to display both the current spool and any superseded versions of the spool.

  • On some construction projects, fabrication might require modifications to the engineering data. For more information, see Plan components with fabrication changes.
