Double-check that you're ready

Before you start installation, make sure that your environment:

Ready? Install the software!

SHARED Tip You can also install Smart API Manager silently from the command line.

  1. Log on to the Smart API Manager web server as an administrative user for the computer and IIS.

  2. Navigate to the Smart API Manager installation location, and double-click SAM_setup.exe.

If the tool does not start and you see an error message like An error occurred: The specified value is not a valid password, restart the tool. To learn more about this known issue, see Configuration Tool will not open because of invalid password.

  3. Select Start Setup and follow the directions to step through the wizard.

I'm upgrading, why can't I pick the Upgrade option?

We do not have an automatic upgrade process yet, so the Upgrade option is not selectable. Before you can install the new version, you must save a configuration file and uninstall the previous version. For instructions, please see Prepare to upgrade.

  4. If you are setting up a development or other small environment and do not have access to an enterprise-level, networked database system, choose the option to install the bundled SQL Server Express LocalDB. This will allow you to configure Smart API Manager so that it can be used.

    • If version 2016 or later of Microsoft SQL Server Express with the LocalDB option is already installed, version 2019 is not installed and Smart API Manager will use the installed version.

    • We include SQL Server Express with LocalDB to make first-time set up and configuration easier, especially for developers, Quality Assurance, and User Acceptance Testing environments. However, for production environments we strongly recommend that you use one of the other supported enterprise databases instead. For more information, see Smart API Manager database.

If you want to continue on to configuring Smart API Manager now, select the Run Configuration Utility after successful installation option. If not, you can Configure Smart API Manager later.
