  1. Selectthe equipment to constrain.

  2. Select Constraints Constraints on the Place Equipment Controls.

  3. Select Mate from the Add Constraint Add Constraint ICON list.

    Select Mate Constraint

  4. Select a surface on the equipment. For example, if you want the equipment to be mated to a slab, you would pick the surface on the equipment (the bottom most) to mate to the slab. Use QuickPick if needed.

  5. Select a surface in the model to which to mate the equipment surface you selected. Again, use QuickPick if needed.

The equipment moves to mate the two selected surfaces.

  6. In the Offset box, type the distance, if any, that you want between the two surfaces.

  7. Complete the placement:

    • Select Finish (CTRL + ENTER) to save your changes and exit the command.

    • Select Finish and Modify Finish Modify ICON (CTRL + SHIFT + ENTER) to save your changes and then start the modification of that object.

Understanding the Mate Constraint

The mate relationship is applied between a surface of the equipment and another equipment surface, structural surface, elevation plane, or grid plane. The surfaces are constrained to be parallel with the indicated offset distance between them. The normal vector pointing out from the surface of one solid points toward the other solid:

The mate relationship can also be applied between the axis of a cylindrical surface and a planar surface. The offset in this situation is applied in the direction of the surface normal. You can use this relationship to orient the equipment's nozzle axis parallel to a wall and offset from the wall a given distance.
