General
Parent System
Displays the name of the selected structure object into which the opening is placed. This field is read-only. Select Select Structure under Boundary and Plane to change this object.
Name
Specifies the name of the selected object. If the name is too long to entirely display in the box, point to the box to display the complete name as a tool tip. If the name is not defined by a rule, User Defined displays. If this name is generated by a naming rule, TagName Rule displays. If you enter a name in this box, Smart 3Dx automatically changes the naming rule to User Defined.
Cutting Limit
Specifies the cutting depth method for the opening.
User Defined
Select to specify the penetration depth of the opening. The cutting depth is applied equally in both normal and opposite of normal of the sketching plane. This option is available for all objects in which you can place an opening.
Through All
Select to completely penetrate the object in which the opening is placed. This option is available for all objects in which you can place an opening.
Through Next
Select to penetrate only one side of an object. For example, you want an opening only on the top flange of a channel section. This option is available only when the object that you select for the opening is a member whose cross-section has parallel webs or flanges or a wall that turns back on itself. In the figure, A is the Through-All option and B is the Through-Next option.
Along the Normal
Select to apply the cutting depth along the normal of the sketching plane as indicated by the arrow. This option is not available if the object being cut is a member.
Opposite to Normal
Select to apply the cutting depth in the opposite direction of the normal of the sketching plane as indicated by the arrow. This option is not available if the object being cut is a member.
Cutting Depth
Specifies the cutting depth for the opening. The software measures the depth from the sketching plane that you specified. Be sure to define a cutting depth that intersects the structure. The cutting depth is indicated by the arrow in the graphic view.
Plane and Boundaries
Select Structure
Select the object in which to place an opening. You can select members or slabs.
Select Plane
Select the plane on the object on which to draw the opening. If you are placing an opening that does not go all the way through the object, the sketching plane defines the side of the object in which the partial opening is placed. If you are editing an opening, this option is only available if the sketching plane for the opening is missing.
Define Boundaries
Specify the opening size and location based on the model objects that define the boundaries of that opening. The software automatically recalculates the size and location of the opening when those boundary objects move. For example, you can select the outside edge of a beam flange as a boundary along one side of an opening. Later, if the section size for the beam is changed and the flange edge moves out an inch, the software automatically moves the edge of the opening an inch to match the new location of the flange edge.
Sketching
Opens the Sketching Controls that you can use to sketch the opening boundary.
Delete
Removes the selected object from the selected boundaries list. Use the Name and Offset Grid to select the boundary to delete.
Remove All
Removes all selected objects from the selected boundaries list. Remove All is not available if there is a sketched boundary in the boundary list. Use the Sketching Controls to delete sketched boundaries.
Name and Offset Grid
Displays a list of the selected boundaries. Select a row to highlight that boundary in the model. Then, type the distance from the boundary to place the opening edge. Type 0 to place the opening edge on the boundary. Type a negative number to offset the opening inside the boundary. Type a positive number to offset the opening outside the boundary. You cannot define offsets for sketch boundaries.
Reset
Resets the boundary list to the last accepted boundaries list.
Accept
Accepts the boundaries that you have selected.
