PDS reference data and 3D model data can be converted to Smart 3D and Smart Reference Data (SRD) to manage the graphical, dimensional, and rules of the model data in Smart 3D.

Reference Data Examples

  • Components: dimensions, descriptions, and connectivity for all disciplines; naming rules, symbols.

  • Piping, electrical, and HVAC specifications and rules.

  • Other rules, such as structural connection rules.

PDS Model Data Examples

  • Equipment: catalog equipment, designed equipment, shapes, nozzles

  • Piping, Pipelines: runs, stock parts, components, connection items, insulation, flow directions

  • Structure: linear/curved members, plates, slabs, stairs and ladders, handrails, slab and plate openings, assembly connections, fire proofing, foundations, footings

  • Hangers and supports: piping, HVAC, electrical supports, hanger assemblies/components

Process Overview

The main steps for converting PDS reference and model data to Smart 3D native objects are listed below.

  1. Using the PDS Translator. Use the PDS Translator to convert your PDS piping specifications to Smart 3D piping reference data, populate dimension table name rules, and update industry commodity codes.

  2. Exporting Data from PDS to Workbooks. Use the PDS Model Data Exporter utility to convert Piping, HVAC, Electrical, Equipment, and FrameWorks Plus model data into Smart 3D. The utility generates the .xml file used to import the data into Smart 3D.

  3. Importing PDS Data from Workbooks to Smart 3D. Imports PDS data from an .xml file, using mapping defined in a Microsoft Excel workbook (.xls file). The software validates the input .xml file against the defined PDS schema. Smart 3D validates the .xml file based on the PDS .xml data and the discipline PDS schema (Equipment, Piping, HVAC, or Electrical for example) to verify that the file is valid for import.
