  1. Open the symbol.

  2. Click Tools > Layers to display the Layer toolbar.

The cross section template contains several different layers. Verify that you create the correct graphics on the appropriate layer. For example, you should create the simple physical representation graphics on the Simple Physical layer.

  3. Click Layer Status on the Layer toolbar.

  4. Double-click Simple Physical in the list to make it the active layer. Verify that the words Simple Physical turn red, which indicates that it is the active layer.

  5. Use the Line command to draw the basic outline of your symbol.

You are not limited to the Line command. You can use any of the graphic placement commands; arc, circle, rectangle, and so forth, to create your symbol.

  6. Use the commands on the Relationship toolbar to constrain the different parts of your symbol. For example, if you are drawing a tee- shaped symbol, more than likely you want both sides of the top flange to be the same length. Therefore, you would use the Equal relationship on the two lines that comprise the bottom and outside edges of the flange to make them equal. Be careful not to over- constrain your symbol. Add relationships that are only absolutely necessary.

  7. Click File > Save.

    • In the Structure task, the software uses the simple physical representation to display the member in the model.

    • The software uses the simple physical representation to calculate the volume and surface of a member. For more accurate calculations, be sure to include the fillets in the simple physical representation.
