Sets a dimension axis for a drawing. A dimension axis allows you to place dimensions that are perpendicular to or parallel to an element.

The default axis in a drawing is perpendicular or parallel to the horizontal axis of a drawing sheet. Dimensions placed along the default axis look like this:

After you set a dimension axis with Axis, you can now place a dimension that runs parallel or perpendicular to the dimension axis that you have defined. To use the axis that you have just specified, you must set the type of dimension axis that you want to use on the dimension ribbon. You do this by clicking Distance Between or Coordinate Dimension on the Label or Dimension toolbar. Then, you click Explicit in the Dimension Axis box on the ribbon so that you can use the dimension axis that you set with Axis.
