You need to dimension the symbol to control the size of your cross section when you place it in the model. This dimensioning allows you to use one symbol to represent multiple sizes of the same cross section.

  1. Open the symbol to dimension.

  2. Click Tools > Layers to display the Layer toolbar.

SHARED Tip The cross section template contains several different layers. Verify that you create the correct graphics on the appropriate layer. For example, you should create the dimensions on the Dimensions layer.

  3. Click Layer Status on the Layer toolbar.

  4. Double-click Dimensions in the list to make it the active layer. Verify that the words Dimensions turn red, which indicates that it is the active layer.

  5. Clear the Active layer only option, so that you can see all symbol layers, and then click Apply.

  6. Click Smart Dimension on the Dimension toolbar, and dimension the simple physical representation. More than likely, you will want to dimension the web and flange thickness, the overall height and width, and possibly the width of the flange from the web to the edge of the symbol. You can dimension as much or as little as you need to meet your requirements.

If the dimensions do not appear, click View > Toolbars, select the Dimension option, and then click OK.

  7. Click File > Save.
