SmartPlant Foundation installation and application server configuration

Before installing SmartPlant Foundation on the application server, ensure that all prerequisite software is installed. For more information, see SmartPlant Foundation Application Server platform recommendations.

After the application software is installed, there are a set of configuration procedures that must be performed to complete the setup of SmartPlant Foundation. For installation and setup details, see Application Server Installation and Setup for SmartPlant Foundation.

  • One of the first post-installation tasks is to create a SmartPlant Foundation site on the application server using the SmartPlant Foundation Server Manager, which is a configuration tool that is installed with the application software. Server Manager is used to create a set of web sites on the server that allows your SmartPlant Foundation data to be accessed over the network. Server Manager can perform several configuration tasks for you, such as configuring Internet Information Server (IIS) properties as required for the web sites, creating system user accounts that are required to run SmartPlant Foundation services, and setting security permissions on folders that the software needs to access to perform basic tasks.

  • Additional configuration may be required on the application server for settings that cannot be automated through Server Manager, such as determining the type of authentication to use for logging into the software, IIS metabase settings, and some IIS performance optimization settings that may be required on some servers.

  • You will also need to setup and configure licensing for SmartPlant Foundation and the other applications that will be integrated with it.

  • Once the operating system and IIS are properly configured, the security and infrastructure of SmartPlant Foundation can be configured. SmartPlant Foundation Desktop Client is used to create document management vaults, application users, and printers.

Register and publish the plant structure in SmartPlant Foundation

You will need to create the Plant Breakdown Structure (PBS) in SmartPlant Foundation that will be used with all integrated tools. Once the PBS is created, you must register and publish the PBS so the integrated tools can retrieve it.

SmartPlant application (tools) installation and preparation for integration

After SmartPlant Foundation is configured, you can install the tools that will be integrated with it.

After performing the installation and setup procedures for a tool, you should create a plant structure within the tool that matches the PBS configured in SmartPlant Foundation. The plant names and number of hierarchy levels should match exactly.

Register with SmartPlant Foundation and retrieve the Plant Breakdown Structure (PBS)

Each SmartPlant application that acts as an integrated authoring tool must register with SmartPlant Foundation in order to publish to and retrieve from the integrated data warehouse.

After the PBS has been published in SmartPlant Foundation, it should be retrieved by each of the SmartPlant authoring tool applications participating in integration.

Configure and map naming conventions and custom properties

To integrate data from all the tools participating in integration, you must configure and map tool naming conventions, and create custom property mapping so that data can be properly shared between tools.
