  1. Click Schedule Management > Production Planning .

  2. From the work breakdown structure, select a WBS node and then click Options > Create work package.

  3. In the Overview section, specify all the required details.

    • Work package weightage should not exceed 100%.

    • You cannot select a future date as the actual start date of a work package.

    • You can select the dates of a work package beyond the date and time range of project start and end dates respectively.

You have created a work package and it is now in Not started state. The work package status will change to In progress once the progress is >0 and <100%.

The newly created work package will have black dotted line borders in the production planning timeline. It will be in this style until it is published from Production Planning > Scheduling.

To add an assignee

  1. Expand the Assignees > Work package assignees section.

  2. Click Add.

  3. Select a necessary option:

Select the person who you would want to assign the work package to and click Add.

The assignee is listed in the Assignees section.

Progress approver

Select Progress approver.

Select the person who you would want to add as a progress approver and click Add.

The progress approver is listed in the Assignees section.

You can add more than one progress approvers for a work package.

To define dependencies

  1. Expand Dependencies section.

  2. Expand the Predecessors or Successors sections.

    • To set a predecessor, click Add predecessor in the Predecessors section.

    • To set successor, click Add successor in the Successors section.

  3. In the corresponding grid, click the Select a work package cell.

  4. Browse and select a work package or milestone from the list.

  5. Click Add.

  6. Specify the relationship and lag or lead in days and hours.

    • If you want to specify lead duration, type a negative value for Lag, for example -10.

    • You can add multiple predecessors or successors to a work package or milestone. To add more dependencies, click Add in the corresponding section.

  7. Expand Constraints section.

  8. Specify the constraint Type and Date as per the project requirement.

    What are constraints?

    A constraint is a restriction or limitation that is imposed on a schedule item to enhance the project performance. Apart from the dependencies, constraints impact Start or End Dates of a work package or milestone.

    You can set the following constraints on a work package or milestone as per the project requirement.

    When you select a constraint, the application auto-populates the start date or end date of a work package or milestone based on the selected constraint type.

    Constraint

    Description

    None

    The work package or activity does not have any constraint. The application selects the activity's early dates as soon as possible to avoid any delay in the project.

    As late as possible

    The application restricts an activity allowing it to start as late as possible without delaying its successors. This option disables the calendar icon.

    Mandatory start

    Specifies the date an activity must begin on regardless of the Start date calculated by the dependencies of the activity.

    Start on or before

    Specifies a date on or before which an activity must start.

    Finish on or before

    Specifies a date on or before which an activity must finish.

    Finish on or after

    Specifies a date on or after which an activity must finish, allowing flexibility for a later completion if necessary, but not earlier than the specified date.

    Start on or after

    Specifies a date on or after which an activity must start, allowing flexibility for a later start if necessary, but not earlier than the specified date.

    Mandatory finish

    Specifies a fixed and non-negotiable finish date for an activity, regardless of the finish date calculated based on dependencies.

If necessary, attach documents and links to the work package

To add folders, documents, or links to the work package, expand Attachments and click Add.

If necessary, add comments to the work package

Comments are not private and cannot be deleted. Anyone who can see a work package can see all its comments.

To add comments to a work package, expand the Comments section. Type your command and click . Your comment is saved and appears in the Comments section.

Comments look like text messages, with the oldest message at the top.

How can I create a copy of the work package?

  1. Select the work package and click Options > Duplicate.

  2. On the Duplicate work package dialog box, type a new name for the workpackage in the respective ID and Name boxes.

    By default, the application adds Copy of prefix to the ID and copies the Name and Overview details to the duplicate item.

  3. If necessary, you can also copy Assignees, Attachments, and Work Steps.

  4. Click Duplicate.
