The File Service can be hosted on the application server or on an optional file server. If the File Service is hosted on the application server, you must ensure that the software prerequisites listed here are also installed on that server.

Hardware Recommendations

  • 2 core high-end server processor

  • 8 GB RAM

  • 5 GB free disk space for software installation

  • 1000 BaseT or higher network interface

  • DVD drive access, either locally or through a network connection (for installation media)

    Hardware sizing, especially for servers, depends on many factors such as the number of concurrent users per site and other software that is running on the machine.

Supported Operating Systems

Microsoft Windows Server 2022 (64-bit) Datacenter or Standard edition (for Update 60 onwards)

Microsoft Windows Server 2019 (64-bit) Datacenter or Standard edition is supported for Update 45 to 59.

  • The Web Server (IIS) role must be installed. In addition to the default settings, include:

    • Common HTTP Features > Static Content

    • Security > Basic Authentication

    • Application Development

      • .NET Extensibility 4.8

      • ASP.NET 4.8

      For Windows Server 2019, .NET Extensibility 4.7 and ASP.NET 4.7 are required

  • The .NET Framework 4.8 feature must be installed. In addition to the default settings, include:

    • WCF Services

      • HTTP Activation

      • Named Pipe Activation

      • TCP Activation

    For Windows Server 2019, the .NET Framework 4.7 feature must be installed.

  • The Windows Process Activation Service feature must be installed. In addition to the default settings, include:

    • Process Model

    • Configuration APIs

  • The Distributed Transaction Coordinator is now installed by default as part of the operating system. This service must be enabled and running for support of 32-bit COM+ application installation.

  • Windows Server is supported with UAC enabled and set to Level 3 (Default).

Be sure to install the most recent Microsoft security patches, available from http://www.microsoft.com/.

Software Prerequisites

  • Microsoft .NET Framework 4.8

  • Smart Interop Publisher 16.x or 17.x with latest HFs (required for viewing certain 2D drawings and Smart 3D models in Hexagon web-based applications, such as the Web Client) for Update 37 and later

    • Smart Interop Publisher 16.0 or 16.1 (required for viewing certain 2D drawings and Smart 3D models in Hexagon web-based applications, such as the Web Client) for Update 36 and earlier

    The 2D drawing file formats that require Smart Interop Publisher include .igr, .pid, .sma, .spe, .sha, and .zyq. The Smart 3D model file formats include .zvf and .vue.

  • MicroStation V8i SS3 and RealDWG 2013 SP1 (required for viewing 3D V8 .dgn files and 3D .dwg files containing proxy objects in Hexagon web-based portal applications, such as Web Client)

  • Microsoft Visual C++ 2013 x64 Redistributable package (required to be installed on the same server as the File Service component for Update 42 and later)

    • Microsoft Visual C++ 2013 x86 Redistributable package (required to be installed on the same server as the File Service component for Update 25 to Update 41)

  • A web browser is required in order to view the online documentation from this server.

SmartPlant Markup Plus

For Updates 36 and later, SmartPlant Markup Plus Server is no longer required. The PDFTron view control is used for View and Markup of third-party and some Hexagon file formats. For more information, see Important news about compatible software and related tools.

For Updates 35 and earlier, SmartPlant Markup Plus Server is required on the servers where the HxGN SDx Server and Remote Services components are installed. If these components are installed on separate servers, SmartPlant Markup Plus Server is required on both servers.
