Work packages help organize, plan, schedule, and manage your work by grouping data, documents, and tags into manageable data sets. Users with a business administrator or document controller role can create work packages.

Groups of data can be created for different purposes, such as getting an overview of the documents' status, measuring or getting a progress rollup, and more. For information on how to create a work package, see Using work packages for plant operations.

The following lists some common types of work packages used in a project:

Type of work package

Details

Work Breakdown Structure (WBS) Work Packages

The WBS work package is a hierarchical grouping of project work elements that help organize and subdivide the scope of work in a project. This grouping is typically geographically based, while the PBS is functionally based.

The WBS packages are typically used for handing over deliverables to the client or managing engineering progress.

The WBS packages are created by a user with the Business Administrator role.

Cost Breakdown Structure (CBS) Work Packages

The CBS work package is a hierarchical grouping of the project work elements that helps organize and subdivide the scope of work in a project.

EcoSys is a web-based platform that provides the deepest capabilities to support the complete spectrum of solutions within the project controls discipline – from project setup, through budgeting, forecasting, and performance reporting.

The CBS packages are typically used for managing the engineering progress within the SDx-EcoSys interface. The interface between SDx and EcoSys allows EcoSys users to better control the progress based on the progress or milestone data of the project documents.

If the Is Progress Item? check box is selected when creating the CBS packages, they are referred to as the progress item work packages. The documents can be related to the progress item work packages, and the progress can be calculated based on the issue purpose. With the documents related to the Progress Items (‘Tasks’), progress of the task can be calculated based on weight factors (EcoSys) and document milestones (SDx). EcoSys users can view the documents as stored in SDx.

The CBS packages are created and maintained by EcoSys, and fed into SDx using the SDx-EcoSys interface. The CBS packages can also be created, updated, and terminated by a user with the SDx Administrator role in the SDx system.

Front End Engineering Design (FEED) Work Packages

Groups together the documents created and managed during the FEED phase of a project. Once the project scope of work is agreed, the FEED work package structure is loaded into the system by a user with the Business Administrator role. The FEED work package can be seen as an electronic version of the FEED design books, containing all documentation handed over from contractor to plant owner at the end of the engineering FEED phase.

Vendor Work Packages

Groups together vendor deliverables as they are loaded into the system. Grouping vendor documents to specific vendor work packages make navigation to specific vendor documents easy and facilitates efficient vendor document management.

The documents are added to the vendor packages during the document submittal process.

General Work Packages

General grouping function to group deliverables, such as document revisions, tags, communication items, and so on for unspecified engineering reasons. These packages can be created by any user to group items together to help manage their work.

  • For plant operations, work packages support the planning workflow for maintenance or inspection work. For example, SDx makes it easy to find and then add documents and information that are needed for maintenance work order created in SAP.

  • The CBS work package is typically cost based, while the WBS work package is geography based, and the PBS work package is function based.

    • The WBS work package is used often by 3D Design and Construction. The breakdown is based on geographical location. The plant is broken down into construction areas or work areas. The construction plans/orders are based on this breakdown. The accessibility of the work areas is critical.

    • The PBS is typically broken down into Plant - Area – Unit, and sometimes extended with Systems and Sub Systems. The PBS is used for the integration with the schematics design tools as well, and is the basis for many tag naming conventions.

  • You can perform the following tasks for managing the engineering progress. In the Work Packages feature set:

    • Run the Document-Progress item Work Packages Report to view the document to progress item work package relation and relate a document to a progress item using the relationship builder.

    • Select Progress Item Work Packages to search for the progress item work package and relate that work package to one or more documents using the relationship builder.
