The main advantage of stateful mode is the avoidance of a separate cache application:

The cache server requires additional hardware: at least one, and probably multiple, servers (or virtual machines), additional memory requirements, and fast network connections between the various servers.

The cache server also complicates the management of the installation, as there is an additional application to maintain.
