While there are businesses that require complex work order scheduling and load balancing processes, some businesses simply want to place work order activities into an employee or crew’s queue to be started and completed as soon as possible. Although detailed scheduling is not necessary, it still makes sense to ‘dispatch’ the work to the employee/crew that is the closest geographically to the work. In other words, if the customer’s assets are in a geographically dispersed area such as a city or county, it is beneficial to view the location of the work in relation to the employee’s/crew’s location prior to dispatching them to the job. An ESRI GIS map can be used for this purpose.

The typical work order activity in this case, is completed in less than a day; however, this is not a requirement. The employee or crew manages their work order activity queue by work order priority, criticality, or by some other means of prioritization. Lastly, the work remains in their queue until it is completed.

The process of placing work into an employee or crew’s queue is called dispatching. Dispatching a work order activity means the work is intended to start ASAP. Therefore, the Dispatch Date is normally the system date; however, activities can be dispatched for a future date. Work order activities that are dispatched (for system date or past date) will be downloaded to the user’s mobile device, via the Mobile Transit app, for completion.

  • Although this screen is optimized for GIS map use, GIS is not required to use this screen.

  • A single work order activity can be dispatched to any number of employees and/or crews.
