A position is often referred to as a functional position, a function, or a process location. A position is the design of a certain function that is required. A function could be a 'process location' (pumping 100 gallons of water per minute) or a function could be a 'safe place for people to work or live' (building, facility).
A position can be a fixed asset that never moves, like a road, bridge, or building. The fact that it cannot move also means that it cannot be kept in the storeroom as a spare.
