CO2e is the universal unit of measurement used to indicate the global warming potential (GWP) of each of the more than one dozen greenhouse gases. Carbon dioxide is the reference gas against which the other greenhouse gases are measured.

While these other gases are lower in quantity in the atmosphere, they have a much larger impact on the environment; they are much more potent in their ability to retain heat in the atmosphere. To make calculations simpler, greenhouse gases are assigned a relationship to CO2. This weighted value is considered the Global Warming Potential (GWP) in units of Carbon Dioxide equivalents or CO2e.

  • CO2e = "Carbon dioxide equivalent"

    • "The common currency of global warming"

  • Carbon dioxide emission is just one of the gases to be concerned about.

    • One ton of methane gas (CH4) has 21 times the potency of one ton of CO2 in its contribution to global warming.

    • Because all the gases have such different contributions, each gas is given a number relative to its impact, compared to CO2, thus CO2e.
