The project cost module begins with the establishment of the project and project structure as follows:

  1. Create a project. There are three different options to setup an EcoSys Project and its structure:

    • Create a project header with no project structure, then establish the project structure manually. This option is used when the structure of a project varies from project to project and is determined by the project manager or project team.

    • Create a project header with no project structure, then establish the project structure by importing it from an external file. This option is used when the structure of the project is established outside of the EcoSys Projects application but not integrated in an automated fashion. For example, the project structure system of record is MS project, and the project structure is exported from MS project and imported to EcoSys Projects.

    • Create a project using a template containing an established enterprise project structure. This option is used when project structures are standardized at the organizational level; for example, if a standard template is used for all construction projects.

  2. Set up or validate project attributes.

  3. Establish project-specific alternate structures (Cost Breakdown Structure, Organizational Breakdown Structure, and/or Alternate Breakdown Structure). This step is only required if project-specific alternate structures are needed.

  4. Build the project structure and its attributes. This step is not required if the project structure is established at the time the project is created (via use of a pre-defined enterprise project template).

International Construction Measurement Standards

International Construction Measurement Standards (ICMS) provide a high-level structure and format for classifying, defining, measuring, recording, analyzing, and presenting construction and other life cycle costs. This promotes consistency and transparency across international boundaries. The ICMS focuses only on issues directly related to the costs associated with the constructed asset so that cross-boundary costs can be benchmarked and the causes of differences in costs can be identified.

There are 15 ICMS main project types that you can select from, for each project based on the type of work.

  • Bridges

  • Buildings

  • Chemical Plants

  • Dams and Reservoirs

  • Mines and Quarries

  • Other Stated

  • Pipelines

  • Power-Generating Plants

  • Railways

  • Refineries

  • Roads, Runways And Motorways

  • Tunnels

  • Waste Water Treatment Works

  • Water Treatment Works

  • Wells And Boreholes

Bridges

Bridge is a structure designed to span across a physical obstacle.

Buildings

Building is a construction with a cover and enclosure to provide shelter for people, equipment or goods.

Chemical Plants

Chemical plant is a facility for the creation of chemical products excluding petro-chemicals. Major buildings and civil engineering works are reported under separate sub-projects under a chemical plant project.

Dams and Reservoirs

Dams and reservoirs are a downstream facility for the creation of petro-chemical products. Major buildings and civil engineering works are reported under separate sub-projects under a refinery project. Wells and boreholes are upstream, and pipelines are midstream.

Mines and Quarries

Mining and quarrying involves identification of potential sites and process to extract or pump minerals and other geological materials from the earth. Usually the geological materials are exacted from orebody, lode, vein, seam, reef, or placer deposit. After extraction, they are processed using heat or chemicals to separate the metal or other substances. A quarry is similar to an open-pit mine from which minerals are extracted.

Pipelines

Pipelines are a series of pipes and tubing for the transfer of liquid, gas, or powder.

Power-Generating Plants

Power-Generating Plants are a facility for the generation of electrical power. Major buildings and civil engineering works are reported under separate sub-projects under a power-generating plant project.

Railways

Railway comprises a rail track composed of two parallel rails fixed to sleepers, or single monorail that includes spurs, sidings, and turnouts for train traffic. The railways are used for tramways, metro rails, light rails, and other rapid mass transit systems.

Refineries

Refinery is a downstream facility for the creation of petro-chemical products. Major buildings and civil engineering works are reported under separate sub-projects under a refinery project. Wells and boreholes are upstream, and pipelines are midstream.

Roads, Runways And Motorways

Roads, runways and motorways are the pavement providing a thoroughfare, route, or way for vehicular traffic on land between two or more places including but not limited to alley, street, collector and rural roads, motorways, county and interstate highways, hard standings. Elevated roads and motorways that are an integral part of bridges shall be included in bridges.

Roads in tunnels are included in Tunnels.

Tunnels

Tunnel is an artificial underground or underwater passageway, completely enclosed except for openings for entrance and exit, commonly at each end, and for ventilation.

Waste Water Treatment Works

Waste water treatment is a facility for cleaning and improvement of water that contains waste products, contaminants or pollutants to make it safe for discharge to land or water.

Water Treatment Works

Water treatment is a facility for cleaning and improvement of water to make it potable.

Wells And Boreholes

Wells and boreholes are formed by the process of drilling or boring in the ground for the extraction of natural resources or the injection of a fluid, or for the evaluation/monitoring of subsurface formations.

For selected type of main project, ICMS also provide units of measurement describing their physical sizes and functional capacities for comparison.

The unit types available for the main projects are:

  • Metric

  • Standard
