The LicenseTimeoutSeconds site settings property in Server Manager determines the length of time that a Desktop Client session can remain inactive before the license for that session is released.

For example, if this property is set to 900, the timeout would occur after 15 minutes (900 seconds) of inactivity. This timeout countdown is reset by the system every time there is client activity on the server. In other words, if the client is inactive for five minutes and then is active again, the system will wait for another 15 minutes of inactivity before timing out.

When the timeout occurs:

  • If the client is still open and the user is still logged on, the Desktop Client application window remains open, but the license for that session is released, and the current session is made inactive. If work is resumed within twelve hours, the session is reactivated, and a new license is acquired. After twelve hours, the inactive session will expire, which will require the user to log on again in order to resume working.

  • If the client was closed but the user never formally logged off, the license for that session is released, which will force the user to log back on again when the client is reopened.
