Piping Input menu: Environment > B31.8 Buckling Calculator

Input Tools toolbar: B31.8 Buckling Calculator

Displays the B31.8 Buckling Calculator dialog box. You can calculate the strain value to determine buckling and lateral instability values for a pipe element according to B31.8-2018 paragraph 833.10, Bucking and Lateral Instability.

From and To nodes for the element display in the window title.

Input

The following properties are read-only. The software uses values defined in the model.

You must type values for the following properties:

  • Max Internal Design Pressure (Pi)

  • Min External Hydrostatic Pressure (Po)

Results

Critical Buckling Strain (Epsilon_cf)

Defines ecfcrit, the maximum longitudinal compressive strain allowed to prevent local buckling due to force-controlled loading.

Error Message

Describes errors in the calculations.

Calculate

Calculates strain and stress results based on the defined properties.

Save & Exit

Saves all property values and results, and then closes the calculator.

Exit

Closes the calculator without saving defined properties or results.
